Today, it is believed that 6 corporations are in control of 90% of all media in America (Business Insider 2012). This is a staggering statistic. The powerhouses in question include Disney, GE, Viacom, Time Warner, CBS & News-Corp. While this statistic only represents media within the US, the country's influence globally should not be ignored. With this in mind, how are any of the ten of thousands of remaining SME's (Small and Medium Enterprises to the Layman) expected to compete? With miniscule marketing budgets in comparison, what can be done to, not only ensure their survival, but compete in way in which customers can be acquired and their business can thrive?
This brings us to the importance of a marketing strategy, more specifically, a digital marketing strategy. The significance, and power, of the digital media realm is undeniable. It is essential for businesses to have a strong digital presence. What sets it apart from other marketing forms is the accessibility and relative value of digital marketing techniques. Implemented effectively, an SME's can actively compete with larger firms and drive their businesses forward. Furthermore, digital tools allow them to track and monitor the success, or failure, of strategies used.
With this blog, I hope to educate smaller business owners on the potential of a digital marketing strategy and present them with tools and techniques they can use themselves. Over the coming weeks, I will highlight specific tools, and in some cases reference how that tool was utilised by a real company.
